Posted on Wed, 17 Feb 2016
Question: I have a little knot on the palm of my hand under the skin. It feels like a bb and i can jiggle it around slightly. It is painful when pressed. It has been there almost a year. It on my left hand just under my middle finger on my palm. No other symptoms, no discolorations. I just have to be careful putting pressure on that spot because it hurts. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
No worries, see GP, watch increase in size or skin changes

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,

It is important to know if it increases in size or not. If it does not increase in size, it is a good sign. secondly, check if there are any nearby swollen lymph nodes. If not, it is a good sign since the likelihood for this to be a malignant tumor is very low.

Generally, these are usually simply cysts, lipomas or benign nodules. They need to be removed in case of severe pain or compression of neighboring structures. Since you are feeling pain already, it might reasonable to envisage removal under local anesthesia and sending of the nodule to the pathologist for analysis.

I suggest however a review by your GP. These nodules or masses under neath the skin with no associated changes on the external skin are usually no issues to be really worried about.

I however suggest a review from your Gp. But I suggest you need to be calm and not all that worried, for from the prescription, there s nothing serious to worry about.

Thanks and kind regards,

Dr Bain
