Suggest Treatment For Painful Menstruation While Having Iron Deficiency

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jun 2016
Question: I was diagnosed with iron deficiency last week and have started taking tablets. This was following very painful periods with sharp pains in pelvic area inbetween for last few months, as well as pains in legs and general exhaustion. Now I think I've caught a general cold: headache, really sore throat and chesty cough, feeling breathless. I wouldn't usually worry but I'm on my period at the moment and what with anemia, I keep sleeping and feel pretty dreadful. Anything to worry about, or bad luck and ride it out? (I have a scan booked to look at my pelvic area).

Brief Answer:
No worries, just supportive care

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Painful menstruation is dysmenorrhea and every 2 in 3 girls have it. No worries for that. Also cold and cough with headache and sore throat are nothing to worry about and are common self resolving sequelae of each other.

Nutshell, take some mefenamic acid for the pain of menses, some advil for cold and sore throat. Do salt water gargles, drink warm comforting beverages like green tea mixed with honey and see if it helps.

As far as iron deficiency anemia is concerned, just taking iron supplements and diet rich in iron and folates will help. Green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits etc are richest sources. Preferably taken iron supplements empty stomach with vitamin c rich fluids like citrus juices. It will increase absorption tendencies of the pills.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
