Suggest Treatment For Painful Salivary Glands

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Feb 2015
Question: I just took my 28 yr old daughter to the emergency because the pain in her salivary gland got unbearable. They told her to drink more and suck on sour candy to increase the saliva and push out any stone. Prescribed oxycodone and sent us home. She took it and it's been 2 hours and she is now crying in pain. She can't afford to go back and pay $150 again... What should we do?

Hi,

Thanks for the query.

Please try doing a bimanual compression by keeping a finger in the floor of mouth adjoining last molar and another finger outside opposite the first finger and squeeze the two fingers like massage and move these simultaneously forward. This can only be possible if the pain is tolerable and it may or may not be successful.

Gently compressing the swollen area from outside will slowly evacuate the area and give relief in pain. Hot compression in the area will also give some relief.

Also she need to start with antibiotics specifically if possible Clindamycin but this may not be available over the counter. In that case your doctor must have provided some, you can start that.

Also take a mucolytic like ambroxal, analgesic and take plenty of fluids and warm liquid sips.

Maintain good oral hygiene and use a mouth wash frequently.

If all these measures do not help, you need to visit an ENT again.

Feel free to ask another query.

Regards
