Question : My boyfriend fell backwards while reclining in a chair... He tried to catch himself landed mostly on his elbow hitting concrete floor. This happened yesterday. Now his elbow is extremely swollen, red and very painful. What kind of injury would you suspect and what kind of treatment?

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. Your boyfriend is likely to have got fracture of olecranon process of ulna ( one of bone forming elbow joint) as his elbow is swollen, red and extremely swollen. Primary treatment of it is rest to joint preferably by splint and analgesic such as ibuprofen 400 mg three times a day after meals. Omeprazole 20 mg before meals per is useful to prevent acidity by analgesic if any. X rays of elbow joint AP and lateral view is useful in deciding further treatment. You can discuss with your doctor about it.
