Question: My lips are swollen red and in pain. They ooze yellow liquid that gets crusty. I took 150mg of Benadryl yesterday and ibprophen. Nothing has helped. I can't drink out of a cup.

Brief Answer:
Oozing from lips is unusual, needs examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to healthcaremagic.com

I understand your concern, however, I should say that oozing from the lips is rare... It doesn't occur without trauma.. So I would be glad if you can share some more details about this oozing..

Since how long have you noticed this oozing?

Is there any pain?

Did suffer any trauma to the area?

Did this swelling, redness and discharge start after taking any particular medicine? If yes, please mention the name of the medicine.

Are you a pure vegetarian?

If you have not suffered any trauma to the area or did not take any medicines that could cause such symptoms, then we must consider vitamin deficiencies..

Deficiencies of Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Ascorbic acid can all lead to such presentation which is called angular stomatitis. The diagnosis can be made only on proper physical examination, so I would request you to kindly visit your PCP or Internist.

Please do write back to me the requested details and also upload a photograph of your lips so that I can understand what is going on better and guide better.

For now, please keep the lips moist by applying a moisturizer, repeated lip smacking can make it worse, so apply a moisturizer, and eat plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, and if you eat non-vegetarian food, you can eat chicken liver(cooked).

You can also take over the counter multivitamin pills too.

Awaiting your response to help you further.

Wishing you speedy recovery.

Best regards

There was no trauma. There is a lot of pain and burning. Went to a clinic and was told its viral infection. I'm also vitamin deficient and being treated for that separately. Symptoms started 2 days ago with no incident or warning and have gotten worse. I can't figure out how to send a pic. But I'm now taking anti-viral meds.

Brief Answer:
Sounds like Shingles, continue treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thank you for writing back with details.

From your description it does sound like Shingles, it is caused by reactivation of chicken pox (herpes simplex) virus.. Do not worry too much, worry, stress can also cause the reactivation of this virus.

For the pain, you can take a pain killer like Motrin, drink adequate amounts of water, complete the course of antiviral medications, it will subside within 5 days.

I hope this information will be of help to you.

Kind regards.
