I have an appointment with a urologist on Monday
I have been taking sulfamethoxazole for 3 days

Thanks for your query,based on the facts that you have posted the painful urination that you have is most likely to be due to UTI secondary to Enlarged Prostate which is common at this age .

Consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and get following basic
tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine routine and culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) Serum PSA.

In the meanwhile continue taking medications prescribed by your family physician.

Further treatment will depend upon result of these tests and final diagnosis.
