Question : I am now on my second anti biotic for a uti. Took Sulfamethoxazole for about 8 days without any relief. Now I am on Cipro, and have taken five tablets (500mg) and still no sense of relief. I did have a urine specimen tested about 10 days ago; e-coli infection results. I am going to finish Cipro tablets (four more) and then return to Urgent Care for another anti biotic. Do you have any suggestions. I have the usual heaviness in vaginal area, urinating more frequently than usual, burning sensation. I used to get frequent bladder infections some 20 yrs ago, but have had very few since then. I am 73 yrs. old. Very little prolapse according to my doctor.

                                    Brief Answer:
Diabetes can cause this
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I can understand your concerns.
The reason of your not getting cured can be
1) you are taking antibiotics which are not effective for the e coli.
Did you get an antibiotic sensitivity testing done of the urine culture?
2) diabetes can cause such a problem .
have you recently got tested for diabetes?

No, I did not get an anti sensitivity test done on either anti biotic.
No, I have not been tested for diabetes; no one in my family has it though.
I have only four more Cipro 500mg tablets left, but if I have felt no relief yet, I do not think Cipro is going to help. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION?
I know there are other anti biotics available, so I feel that I need to try something else.
I do have Detrol available, but it is not an anti biotic. Do you feel it will help, at this point?

                                    Brief Answer:
No it will not
Detailed Answer:
Dear
Trying out new antibiotics without the sensitivity test is like shooting an arrow in the dark.
How will you know the next antibiotic will work. There are dozens of them and you need to find the correct one first by the antibiotic sensitivity test.
Also get a diabetes check. No family history does not mean you cannot get it.
