Question: I am a 45 yr old woman. I feel fit and active most of the time, and can walk for an on the flat without any problems. However when I hit some steps my heart races after only a dozen steps and I feel totally breathless, to the point where I have to stop and let my heart settle and take very deep breaths to get my breath back, my mouth also feels incredibly dry at this point, like someone has just sucked all the moisture out of it. My body feels fully able to climb the steps, but my heart and my breath does not. I should have also said that I DO NOT think it is stress/anxiety related.

Brief Answer:
Need investigations for heart and lungs diseases

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
This is certainly not an anxiety. The possibilities are of heart disease, anemia and we need to rule out lungs diseases as well. Do you have any history or family history of chest pain or any heart diseases, history of getting up from sleep during midnight with breathlessness, edema feets etc.
You should get hemoglobin tested first and if normal then ecg, chest x ray PA view and echocardiography. Get blood pressure checked once. It's better once you visit doctor to get yourself examined.
Till the time, you should restrict salt intake as minimum as possible. And treatment will depends on cause. Hope this helps you.

Both of my parents developed angina, but they were around 55 years old at the time. Could that be a possibility?

Brief Answer:
Yes that could be a possibility

Detailed Answer:
So family history is present putting you at a risk of heart disease. You ll need evaluation for the confirmation of same and ruling out other things which I mentioned in earlier posts.
