Suggest Treatment For Persistent Bowel Movements After Meals

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Aug 2016
Question: Everytime I eat something after a short period (within an hour) and having bowel movement I need to go to the toilet. This has been happening for some time and I have suffered weight loss (especially around my muscles) predominantly in the arms and shoulders and thighs. This has been going on for last few months.
I am aware I have a low bile salt issue.
Any thoughts please? I am not a person who visits doctors frequently.

Brief Answer:
Different possible causes

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for using healthcaremagic,

Persistent bowel movements after meals can cause weight loss as you stated.

More than 3 bowel movements a day is called diarrhea and diarrhea that continues for a long period of time is called chronic diarrhea.

There are different possible causes such as: (1) persisting infection- a stool sample to the lab would check for this
(2) inflammatory bowel disease such as crohns disease or ulcerative colitis- these are diagnosed by a scope of the colon
(3) high levels of thyroid hormone can also cause this problem
(4) diabetes- it does this by affecting the nerves in the stomach and intestines
(5) side effect of medication
(6) food intolerance - specific ingredients may be the problem
(7) lactose intolerance

To find out the cause you would need: (1) a food diary to note specific meals that may worsen the problem
(2) blood tests such as complete blood count, thyroid hormone levels, screening for diabetes
(3) a stool sample to the lab
(4) a scope may be needed

It would be best to see a gastrenterologist, a doctor that specializes in disease of the gastrointestinal tract.

He or she would be able to assess you and find a cause.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
