Suggest Treatment For Persistent Bradycardia

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: I take metoprolol and benicar daily. My BP readings are normal but pulse readings are low.
Early morning readings range from 44 to 48. One hour after exercise (30 minute swim most days of the week) it goes to 58 - 61. Later in the day and evening the range is 55-59. Should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Metoprolol dosing and/or continuation should be reviewed.

Detailed Answer:

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I would like to explain that, facing your persistent bradycardia (even during important physical exertion, like swimming for 30 min), it is necessary to review your metoprolol daily dose.

If you don't have any disturbing clinical symptomatology (like tiredness, doziness, etc), there is nothing to worry too much. Just talk with your prescribing doctor to see the possibility of lowering metoprolol dose.

Otherwise, if your persistent bradycardia is associated with significant clinical symptoms, then an immediate strategy of gradual tapering off, for stopping metoprolol should be started (beta-blockers should be stopped gradually to avoid rebound phenomenon).

Just talk to your doctor about the above mentioned possibilities.

Hope to have been helpful to you!

Feel free to ask me whenever you need! Greetings! Dr. Iliri
