Question: I have been sick with all sort of cold symptoms for 5 weeks straight. I have been on antibiotics and I have been taking loads of supplements including horseradish and garlic, vitamin c, high strength echinacea and olive leaf am extract.
However, I am not getting any better. My snot is still green and I am still coughing it up from my lungs as well as from my nose.
Is it possible to make an appointment for IV antibiotics at my gp ?
Should I go to the outpatients for IV antibiotics ?
What should I do ?

Brief Answer:
ENT specialist's advise/ self care would help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxx,
Thanks for the query under Healthcare magic platform.
I have read your query & understood your concern.
You have a long standing cold with thick green discharge & cough with thick green sputum too. In spite of being on antibiotics you are not improving & so you are concerned & feel need to get IV antibiotics.
* Route of taking antibiotics depends on general condition of a patient . Oral antibiotics with specific selection is as useful as injections ( IM/IV ),when patient as good general condition. Only when patient can not digest / ingest pills ( as in vomiting/ unconscious patient/ severely ill patient patient./ emergency when the drug action needs to be instant.)
So, I would suggest proper evaluation of the infection by expert along with investigations to find causative organism & effective antibiotic.( culture & sensitivity test of the nasal discharge )/ Blood CBC / X ray of chest/ sinuses to judge the extent of infection. Please consult an ENT specialist for this.
An effective antibiotic given in sufficient dose for a sufficient period will cure you. IM/ IV antibiotic may be given to start with .. so as to start fast effect, followed by oral ones... if the treating specialist feels necessary.
* Apart from supplements you are taking you may need anti allergic/ decongestant pills / cough syrup/ histamine blocker or mast cell blocker pills / B complex/nasal vapor/ gargles/ nebulization... according to severity & causative factor with ENT specialist's advise.
Self care- You should avoid exposure to any known allergen/ dust, fumes, cold/ fried or oily food/ cold drinks.
Take the medicines regularly as advised.
Avoid psychological stress.
Thus with expert advise , proper selection of medication & self care you would definitely overcome your problem.
I hope the answer has been informative as well as useful to you. Any follow up query is welcome.

I went back to the doctor and he gave me a different antibiotics that was also stronger and some panafcortelone which I think he said was for my sinuses being inflamed and he gave me two days off work which combined with my weekend gives me four days for my new antibiotics to run its course. Work is where i am exposed to the cold because I work in the freezer and fridges for the most part of my day.
I have only had one of the antibiotics and two of the panafcortelone last night with dinner and a good night sleep for once seeing as I don't have work today and I am already starting to feel a little better!!

Brief Answer:
continue the medicines as per docyor's advise./ get protected from cold

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,
Thank you for the follow up query.
I am happy that the new antibiotic has shown +ve effect on your problem. Probably the bacteria causing the infection had gone resistant to your old antibiotic & have started declining with the new one.. to which they were never exposed before, so it's effective in controlling their growth & so the symptoms are reduced. Please take the complete course as per the doctor's advise & let the problem be removed en root.
I would also like to draw your attention to two more factors which seem to be contributing to the relief.
- You are away from your work.. that is exposure to cold at your working place. The freezing temperature can precipitate sinus affection, specially when you are down with infection/ cold.
This fact calls for protection from exposure to cold in coming few days .. till you are back to complete normal health from present health problem.
A long leave/ absence may not be practicable.. so make it a point to cover your chest, forehead& sinuses with a warm rapper, while you join your duty ( for few days & taking tonic( & high protein diet to improve your general health )
- Another thing to note is the pill Panafcortelone you are taking. It contains cortisone. It's a wonderful drug which controls inflammation instantly/ it also has anti allergic property, and so it has with very first dose.! It has a quick control over the situation, but needs to be taken in proper dose & thereafter tapper off & then discontinue.
I would request you to be very particular about it's time & mode of intake as per your doctor's advise & not to stop it abruptly once got relief , but..follow doctor's advise strictly.
In order to prevent future attacks...I would also stress for getting allergy screening test done, identify the allergy & try to avoid exposure to allergen in future.
With this precaution, I feel you would overcome the bothering cold & return back to perfect health.
I hope this has answered your query. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.
