Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.
First of all, it is sad to know what your son had been experiencing lately. Based on the history you have shared, it seems as if he is suffering from an acute attack of upper airway infection which can be pharyngitis or of throat or tonsils weren't inflammed then tonsillitis is ruled out. Their are many other causative bugs even if strep swab is negative.
He may need to have a course of antibiotics like augmentin or azithromycin alongwith anti histamines like cetrizine or loratidine. OTC analgesics or anti inflammatory drugs like acetaminophen will also help with pain and swelling.
Saline water gargles may be continued in between and cold drinks and greasy oily foods should be avoided.
Wishing him a quick recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
