Question: I had asked a question to you 6 days back about cold and cough in my 10 month old daughter and this is a followup question on the same.

Paediatrician had recommended below medicines after examining her.

1. Sinarest 0.8 ml for 3 to 5 days - we gave her for 5 days 0.8ml 3 times a day. Stopped on Wednesday(15-Mar-2017)
2. Hot water steam - gave her for 3 days
3. Saline drops - Still using
4. Karvol drops on her dress. - Stopped after 2 days.

She still has cough and it looks like a dry cough. When she start coughing, she does it continuously for sometime and cough exactly like the way we elder people cough. Not very frequently but when she starts coughing then it continuous for few seconds to minute. Frequency is more or less 2 to 3 times at night and morning couple of times and 3 to 4 times in day approx.

But she don't have blocked nose now and dark yellow mucus keeps coming out from her nose which we are cleaning regularly.

Other than cough and mucus coming out from nose she is active, taking feeds and no fever as such. She sometimes cough while feeding and taking food.

Paediatrician had also recommended to take "Chericof" 2ml for 2 days if the she don't feel better after taking Sinarest for 5 days. We have not started her with this medication yet.

I feel really worried when I see her coughing, so thought of asking the followup questions.

1. Do you think that her cough will go by itself and we should ignore it?
2. Should we start with "Chericof" 2ml twice a day?
3. Do we need to take her back to the Paediatrician for the follow up?
4. Any other advise please.

Brief Answer:
Start chericof

Detailed Answer:
hi,
welcome once again.

After the child is cured, cough may persist for 3 to 4 days. It's because the phelgm needs to come out. In adults, the phelgm can be spitted out by self but in small babies, there is no method to clear chest so after the child is alright, cough persist which has mucus in it.

however, if cough is more like it's disturbing sleep of child at night or results in vomitings or if fever is present then antibiotic like cefpodoxime needs to be started.

Sinarest is mainly for nasal discharge and it has very less role in controlling cough. Chericof is mainly for relieving cough. Start chericof as advised by pediatrician.

Don't give both medicine together, if you start chericof then stop sinarest.

take some precautions like prevent child from cold exposure. use diaper at night, cover child during night, use warm clothes, avoid cold water and cold items.

If cough persist, vomiting occurs or fever is present then get your child Re examined by doctor as the child may need antibiotic like cefpodoxime. also, an x-ray chest needs to be done so that any infection in lungs can be ruled out.

take care.

Thanks for your response:

Kindly answer my below followup questions.

1. I was reading that Chericof is not good for babies and it should be avoided. Is this true and if yes, then what is the safe cough medicine we can give her?
2. I also read that Sinreast AF dosage should be between 0.2 to 0.4 ml for babies between 7 to 12 months. I am not sure why the doctor advised 0.8 ml 3 times a day. I am little worried that we have already given her this dose for 5 days. Should I be really be concerned about this as well? Her weight is 9.5 kg.

Please answer the above question and anything for us to concern about the Sinarest dosage already given.

Brief Answer:
Dose is correct

Detailed Answer:
hi,
welcome once again.

Dose of medicine in child is dependent on weight of child. At 10 months, the normal weight is around 8 kg. The pediatrician has correctly given the dosage of sinarest drops according to weight of child. As your child weight is 9.5 kg, this dose is appropriate for baby. Don't worry about it.

Choice of cough syrup depends on condition of patient. Chericof is a widely used cough syrup and dose is also correct according to weight. Actually, if you search any cough syrup in Google, it will always say that it has this side effects. There is no harm in using chericof at correct dose. You should give chericof cough syrup as recommended by pediatrician as he has actually examined the child.

Don't worry. In Google it's written like that so people should not give medicine on their own.

Take care.
