Posted on Sat, 6 Dec 2014
Question: I have a chest congestion, persistent and exhausting cough with yellow phlegm, high fever and loss of appetite. Am on Ceftum 500 twice a day. Three days later, not much improvement. What can I expect as recovery time and has my doctor missed out on medications for symptomatic relief?

Brief Answer:
you should take other symptomatic drugs too.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.

In my opinion you are having lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI). Because high grade fever, loss of appetite, chest congestion, thick yellow phlegm etc are seen in LRTI, not in URTI ( upper respiratory tract infection).

So first get done chest x ray to rule out LRTI (Pneumonia). And if infiltration is present than we should step up the antibiotics.
If chest x ray is normal than follow these treatment.
1. Drink plenty of fluids
2. Warm saline gargles 5-6 times a day.
3. Start antihistamine drug. Twice daily.
4. Start antipyretic and anti inflammatory drug twice daily.
5. Avoid oily and spicy food.
Take this treatment along with ceftum 500 twice a day for 7 days. You will be alright.

So in my opinion you should get done chest x ray first to rule out pneumonia. And if this is normal than start above mentioned treatment with ceftum 500 twice daily.

Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
