Suggest Treatment For Persistent Cough

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Oct 2014
Question: Hi,

I have been consistently coughing over a week now. Along with cough, I get flum. Though, there is no symptom of running nose. I have been doing gargling (betadine) and occasionally took steam as well. Avoided cold water as well.

Coughing & flum continues. Haven't taken any medicine.

Pls advise.

Thanks,

Brief Answer:
Mucolytic cough syrup.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXX,
I can understand your concern.
I would like to know few more details.
What is color of sputum?
Do you have fever?
It looks like respiratory tract infection.
If I were your treating doctor I suggest you mucolytic cough suppressants like ascoril expectorant twice daily for 5 days and antihistamines like levocetrizine once daily before bed for 5 days.
Continue steam inhalation and betadine gargles.
Avoid exposure to dust and spicy, oily food.
If you will not improve after 5 days then I suggest you visit a pulmonologist or lung specialist for complete clinical examination and investigations like chest X ray, sputum examination and related blood tests to rule out infection or allergic bronchitis.
If you have any queries I will be happy to help you.
Thank you.
