Suggest Treatment For Persistent Ear Infection

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: I've had three ear infections in past 2 and 1/2 months. I have been treated 3 times by different nurse practitioners. The last medication I took was SMZ/TMP DS 800-160 TAB INTE 2 times daily for 10 days. I finished this on August 14 and I feel like I still have infection. I can't remember medicine I took other two times. I'd like to know what I should do, see a specialist for ear nose and throat problems. I have had ear infections off and on all my life but can't shake this one. I do not currently go to an ear nose and throat specialist.

Brief Answer:
You should see an ENT specialist

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
You have not specifically mentioned what your problem is apart from the broad term ear infection. Whether you have ear pain, discharge or problem in hearing should be known before commenting on the diagnosis or plan of management. Thus I need more details to be better able to help you.

From your history, it looks like a chronic ear problem not relieved by repeated use of antibiotic.

So my suggestion would be to stop taking further antibiotics. It can be a middle ear problem like otitis media and can lead to further spread of infection if not diagnosed properly. So go to an ENT specialist, get an examination done and start treatment as advised.

Hope this was useful.
Regards.
