Suggest Treatment For Persistent Loose Stool And Discomfort Under The Ribs

Question: Hi. Almost 3 weeks ago I started having loose stools with discomfort under the ribs on both sides. I went to my gp after about a week and she put me on Levsin since I've had digestive disorders before. She did blood and stool tests which were normal. The Levsin caused terrible constipation and I did not have a bowel movement for 5 days. When I did, it was explosive. An hour later I had quite a bit of mucus discharge that had blood in it which was alarming. Since then I haven't been taking the Levsin, but I've still been having the abdominal discomfort, loose stools alternating with constipation, and another recent incident of a little bloody mucus discharge. Although I've had digestive issues in the past, the symptoms haven't been identical. I had a colonoscopy in Nov 2015. Clear with no polyps. I had had one 4 years prior to that clear with no polyps. I am waiting to get in to see a gastroenterologist but am concerned about my symptoms. Is colon cancer anything to be really concerned about given my recent clear colonoscopies? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Chronic gastroenteritis or intestinal mucosa inflammation its not carcinoma

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query,

Have noted all your details,

There are two possibilities-

1) Most likely its because of chronic Gatroenteritis associated with disturbed Gastro intestinal flora.
2) Due to severe constipation caused by Levsin ,mucosa of rectum and anal canal get eroded sometimes causing mild bleeding along with mucous.

As mentioned as it's most likely due to gastroenteritis. It is an intestinal infection marked by diarrhoea,Constipation, cramps, nausea, vomiting etc.As stool test is positive for bacterial infection you need not to take any antibiotic.

-Take lots of yogurt in diet.It contains lactobacillus(Good bacteria of gut).Lactobacillus acidophilus is used to help re-establish the normal intestinal flora. It is used to restore intestinal flora, the loss of which may be caussed by diarrhea.

-Take Fybogel husk-Fybogel sachets and Fybogel Hi-Fibre sachets both contain the active ingredient ispaghula husk, which is a type of medicine called a bulk-forming laxative. Ispaghula is a type of fibre. It swells when it comes into contact with fluid in the gut and thus increases the volume of the faeces. It increases the bulk in your stool, an effect that helps to cause movement of the intestines. It also works by increasing the amount of water in the stool, making the stool softer and easier to pass.

-An over counter probiotic should be taken thrice a day.Major probiotic mechanisms of action include enhancement of the epithelial barrier, increased adhesion to intestinal mucosa, and concomitant inhibition of pathogen adhesion, competitive exclusion of pathogenic microorganisms, production of anti-microorganism substances and modulation of the immune system,Hence improving overall digestion.
-Drink a lot of orange juice and coconut water.Take juices rich in potassium to compensate for electrolyte loss in stools.

-Eat light food,Avoid spicy and junk food.

-Fruits and vegetables, which contain high amounts of fiber, should be added to your diet ,Whole-grain bread, XXXXXXX oatmeal, beans and lentils can also relieve the problem so use it Instead of highly processed rice, eat brown rice, millet.

Apart from this don't take any medication.
Follow this for five days if still not relieved ultrasound abdomen should be done along with repeat stool routine and microscopy.

As per your query don't worry its not colon cancer,Colon cancer patient usually does not present with history of few weeks only,Just follow what i said .

Follow up after 5 days.

Regards
