Suggest Treatment For Persistent Pain In Finger While Having Finger Bone Chip Fracture

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Jan 2016
Question: I fell and my left ring finger bent inward. The next morning,Christmas Eve, I went to Urgent Care because the walk in clinic at the Orthopedic Center was closed for the Holiday. They took x-rays and diagnosed me with a chip fracture on the side of my inner knuckle. I saw the x-ray and I could see a circular piece of bone that had chipped off and separated from the knuckle. They put it in a splint, which keeps hitting against things and a week later, I am in the same, if not worse, pain than when it happened. All the doctors I am familiar with are out of town together! I got an appt for next Tues but honesty am thinking I've made it worse unless it's normal for there to still have the pulse pounding feeling in my finger with pretty bad constant throbbing and pain. What could be going on and should I go and get another x-ray?

just out of curiosity, are you working on another case right now?

Brief Answer:
The fractured chip may need a fixation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The persistent pain can be due to mild dislocation of the fractured chip. The pain will subside as soon as the chip will come in its normal place. Try to avoid any movement at the injured area. It is best to consult an orthopedician for evaluation. It may need a fixation with a wire. Till then keeping the finger strapped is the only option.
A repeat X-ray will help in evaluating the position of the fractured fragment.
I hope this answers your query.
