Suggest Treatment For Persistent Sore Throat

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jun 2016
Question: Hi. I've had a sore throat for over 3 weeks now. It started with a slight cold and hasn't gone away. I have no cold symptoms anymore, just the sore throat. Checked with my doctor for strep throat 1.5 weeks ago and she didn't think it was strep, but viral. Last few days though, my throat is still sore on my left side. The soreness is now accompanied with a feeling of something caught in my throat or the inside swollen. My glands don't feel swollen, as they did 2 weeks ago. Just feels as though there is a lump in my throat when I swallow...with pain on that side when I swallow too. I don't have a fever either or feel any visible lump on the outside.

Brief Answer:
Bacterial infection is possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM

I have gone through your query. Bacterial throat infection is a possibility. Other possibility is acid reflux after a viral infection which can make the throat feel like that.
If you were my patient in such condition then I would suggest broad spectrum antibiotics like Co-amoxiclav or azithromycin along with proton pump inhibitors like esomeprazole. Taking chewable vitamin C is also recommended. Take warm fluids like tea with lemon and honey , warm chicken soup with pepper etc.;
Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
