Suggest Treatment For Pin-worm Infestation In An Infant

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Jan 2015
Question: Hi I have a new born baby girl of 4 weeks and just seem to have pinworms. Her mum was suspected that had pinworms 7 days ago and is being treated. The baby is on breast feeding and everything seems to be regular except that last evening she cried for straight 45 minutes until I have gently scrubbed her bottom through the diaper. I know that I will need to examine the worms under microscope with my doctor, but my question is if exists any type of pinworm treatment to a new born.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be pinworm infestation

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Sir

It is unlikely for an infant to have pinworm infestation. From the clinical picture provided it appears to be mild diaper rash that could be the cause for persistent crying.

I would suggest you the following

1 . microscopic examination of stools / scrapping from perianal region to rule out pinworm infestation

2. Local application of Zinc oxide paste (Dr XXXXXXX ) : After every diaper change , clean and dry the area thoroughly and apply Zinc oxide paste.

3. Give diaper free time : Do not use diaper for 1 to 2 hours during day

If pinworm infestation is proved antihelmenthic drug like Albendazole can be used after consultation with your baby's Paediatrician.

Take care
