I read your question and i understand your concern. As far as pneumonia is concerned in old age people. It can be as prolonged as one year. It may not be there for whole 8 months. It might have shown up later after initial complains of discomfort and fatigue and cough. They should have though sorted out the organism responsible and then treated specifically for that to prevent any resistance.
But giving empiric therapy a shot is also wise. If hubby did not respond to azithromycin they will run some further labs to sort out the organism responsible and its predisposition to susceptible antibiotics and then treatment and recovery will be more prompt.
He is already practising good hygiene and does not smoke. Just get him vaccinated and use the antibiotics prescribed and get a follow up after 2 weeks. I am sure he will respond. It is treatable. Just eneds the proper care which he is getting in guise of you.
