default
Posted on Sat, 14 Jan 2017
Question: My daughter is 12 and I took her to the walk in clinic today with possible UTI. She had blood in her urine but no fever. Doctor gave her 400 mg bactrim twice a day. She has had 3 doses, and now has a 103 fever, still blood in urine and vomiting. Could this be an adverse reaction to the medicine or something else.

Brief Answer:
To me the symptoms appear to be due to infection not adverse reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

Blood in urine is a common symptom of urinary tract infection(UTI).Bactrim contains trimethprim and sulphamethoxazole and works well in UTI.
As the blood in urine was there before starting of treatment, the chances of adverse reaction due to bactrim is unlikely.
Fever, vomiting also suggest urinary tract infection.
It usually takes 48-72 hours to see the effect of antibiotic.
Fever and vomiting can occur as side effect of bactrim but it's rare. The serious side effects of bactrim are skin rashes, breathlessness, gross bleeding and if you notice any consult your physician.
To me it appears to be due to infection rather than adverse effect.
Here I would like to get urine test done (to confirm the UTI)and to continue the medication.

I hope this helps.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Wishing for your child's speedy recovery.
Regards
