default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: I have a prolonged sore throat without any other symptoms for alomst a month now. I hvae seen the doctor twice and there seem to be no improvment. The pain varries from itching to severe pain by the close of the day. What could be the cuase of a sore throat without any other symptoms? Can it be the result of a compromised immune system?

Brief Answer:
can be reflux disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome to healthcaremagic,

2 common causes of sore throat are
1) Infection.
2) Reflux disease.

only examination can tell the difference.

If the symptoms have not responded to a full course of augmentin with correct dose then it is probably not infection. Augmentin is the most appropriate antibiotic for stubborn upper respiratory tract infections. But it will not work if the dose is incorrect.

Reflux disease is a very common cause of sore throat. In this condition the acid in the stomach refluxes back into the throat and causes pain. It is usually associated with heartburn and sometimes dry cough and hoarseness.

Please see an ENT doctor to come to a diagnosis. At this point of time, there are nothing pointing towards immunocompromisation. Yet a physical examination is necessary to arrive at a conclusive diagnosis.

Until then do warm salt water gargling 5 times daily.
