Question : Hello,
I have a 2.6 years old Boy. He is facing Hard Stool problem from last 3-4 months once we shifted from XXXXXXX to XXXXXXX Visited many doctors and they suggested to give 'Laxopeg' daily for next 6 months and use Glycerin Repository. Once he consumes Laxopag, Stool becomes soft for few days and but still he tried hard to make the Stool out of his body. This has been the issue from last 3-4 months. Even we are now giving him Bisleri water instead of Municipal drinking water.
Please suggest ASAP.

-XXXX

Hello,

We have already tried Lactulose for long duration in the past but it doesn't resolve the problem.
At the same times, I would like to know if giving regular 'Laxopag' has any adverse impacts on health of kid. In the sense, it should become a habit that Stool becomes dependent on consuming Laxopeg.
He consumes less water. That is also one issue.
We are already avoiding the food you mentioned.

Can you share some Diet plan for this problem so that we can follow it to get the problem resolved.

Brief Answer:
Give lots of fluids and fibre rich diet

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I understand your concerns but don't worry. The most likely reason for constipation in this age group is poor hydration and low fibre intake in diet.
Start Syp. Lactulose 7.5 ml 2-3 times daily at present and taper it gradually over months as the condition improves by diet and fluids.

Ensure at least 2.5- 4 liters of water intake daily. Give fibre rich diet like salads, green leafy vegetables, dry fruits, etc with a healthy balanced diet. Avoid constipating foods especially banana, fried foods, cookies, dairy products(ice creams and cheese) etc during constipation episodes.

Hopefully it will be of help.
Take care

Brief Answer:
Give higher dose of lactulose if required or continue with laxopeg

Detailed Answer:
Hi
You may give higher dose of lactulose if he doesn't improve with the dose given earlier. Laxopeg and lactulose are safe and can be continued for longer durations.
But the root cause i.e poor water intake needs to be improved to get rid of problem completely. Drugs only help in symptomatic relief and do not treat it.
The diet plan is same as for any other child. Only additional water and fibres are required. Avoid junk food and refined sugars.
