Posted on Sat, 7 Mar 2015
Question: My 2 1/2 year old daughter has had a fever for three days now. the highest it got was 103.6. I've been monitoring her and giving her some children's ibuprofen. That takes care of the fever for several hours but then It comes back. She's been somewhat lethargic and complaining of being cold. She is also very congested. Started snoring at night now. During the day her nose just runs clear nonstop. She's been complaining of brightness of lights etc. Her eyes are also itchy. What would be your opinion. on all this.

Possibly non specific viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms

Going by description of symptoms following possibility needs to be considered

1. Measles : Occurrence of fever , redness of eye , running nose and if associated with rash on skin then possibility of Measles needs to be considered

2. Non specific viral infection : It is more likely the cause of symptoms

In both cases the management is symptomatic treatment. I would suggest you the following

1. Normal Saline Nasal drops : 3 to 4 drops in each nose 6 times a day.

2. Steam inhalation : Preferably using electronic steamer. Maintain safe distance from baby.

3. Decongestant anti allergy syrup will be helpful for both runny nose and itching of eye

4. Continue giving Ibuprofen for fever

wow OK. did not think of measles. Isn't that dangerous? She doesn't have a rash that I know of. She's complaining about being thirsty a lot. Which the air here is really dry now BC of the heat. So its OK to give allergy meds and ibuprofen at the same time?

Do ensure good intake of water

Dear Ms

Measles is self limiting and not dangerous. Do ensure good intake of water. Ibuprofen and allergy medicine can be taken simultaneously.

OK that's good to know. I'm starting to wonder if an epidemic has been going around this area. About 15 diff kids have had runny nose, conjuvitis, coughing fever etc. My daughter is also sneezing a lot. Does that sound like measles?

Brief Answer:
More likely to be viral respiratory infection

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms

Going by description it is more likely to be non specific respiratory viral infection if there is no associated rash. Exact diagnosis will depend on clinical examination. Usually the rash of measles occurs behind the ears and over the chest usually on 3rd day after initiation of fever.

In either cases its self limiting. Maintaining nutrition/hydration , controlling temperature, symptomatic treatment of respiratory symptoms is all that is required.

Deepak
