Posted on Mon, 30 Jun 2014
Question: I am 54 year old male that went through sti testing a year ago and have not had sex since until recently. The results of the test were negative, however with the new sex partner I have noticed a rash on the head of the penis. No sores no discharge no scabs just a rash that seems to respond with an antifungal cream although can take a long time and is definitely more noticeable for days after sex

Brief Answer:
Possibility of Candidal balanitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

You seem to be suffering from a recurrent candidal infection, of the glans (balanitis).

Though you have been doing the right thing by using an antifungal cream, but you need to figure out the source of recurrence: 2 possibilities arise

-Either you sexual partner has vulvovaginal candidiasis, which is causing recurrent infections OR
-It is endogenous: undetected diabetes, oral antibiotics etc.

Does you sexual partner complains of vaginal/vulval itching or vaginal discharge?

I would suggest empirical treatment with an oral antifungal for both of you simultaneously e.g Single oral dose of Fluconazole 150 mg, for both of you would be curative.

Avoid sexual contact with your partner for a week.

You could also get a test for blood sugar and if it comes out to be positive, take it further from there.

Regards
