Suggest Treatment For Red Hives All Over Face

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: I broke out in red hives
All above my face.....I am taking 20 mg of Prednisone for 3 days now (1 a day)
And using Fluticasone propionate cream 0.05. Twice a day for 3 days.
My hives are a paler shade of red, but are peeling terribly and my face is so dry that I could cry.
I have been applying ice wrapped in a face rag for the discomfort. Have been thinking of not using the cream anymore and using some kind of moisturizer such as Eucerin original healing cream ( not a Rx)
Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Upload a picture, possibility of it being sunburn

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query.

I would like you to post a picture.

I am not very sure if these are Hives. The reason being:

-Why would hives be confined to just the face?Hives are usually generalized and they itch a lot
-Hives are evanescent. They disappear in a few hours(4-6 hours) with leaving a trace. They may reappear again a few hours later. Whereas you have been having them for 3 consecutive days without them disappearing at all? If that is the case it is certainly not hives.
-Moreover Hives never ever peel? They resolve without leaving behind a trace.

Is it a sunburn you are getting treated for?Since it is just confined to the face. Moreover the discomfort probably burning sensation that you mention is more a feature of sunburn rather than hives. Hives itch rather than burn.

Moreover the treatment that you are taking is suggestive of that you are being treated for either a sunburn or a dermatitis on face.

Regarding the choice between using Eucerin or fluticasone. I would say that you should use Fluticasone for sunburn on face for faster relief.

I am a pharmacist....I never go I the sun... If you look up side effects from Keflex you can see that the face can certainly break out in hives.

An 83 year old doctor saw me and prescribed this medicine for me. His diagnosis of
me is totally accurate.
I do understand that without you seeing me is absurd for you to make a diagnosis.
I wanted your
Opinion on the dryness and peeling to determine whether I should right now, before I go to bed to continue with the harsh drying cream or moisturize.

Brief Answer:
Suspected drug reaction to keflex

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Ok. I apologize if I offended you. Sorry if conveyed you a wrong impression. I am very young to you and therefore i owe respect to you.

I am not at all refuting his diagnosis but I was just trying to find out whether it is actually hives or something else.

With due respect to your profession and the XXXXXXX doctor that you consulted, I am here to help you with your problem in the best possibly way. Of course being a pharmacist you certainly have a lot of knowledge about drugs.

Indeed keflex can cause a drug reaction. Keflex induced drug reactions can be in the form of hives but they are usually generalized and itchy. Other severe drug reactions associated with keflex are blistering or peeling red skin rash (Stevens Johnsons syndrome or TEN like) but the rash is widespread and involves skin as well as mucosa.

Anyways, you are on the right treatment for a suspected drug rash to keflex in the form of oral and topical steroids. I would suggest that you may use both Eucerin as well as fluticasone mixed in equal proportions(1:1). That would take care of the redness as well as dryness and peeling.

Let me know if I can help you further

Wish you a quick recovery
