Suggest Treatment For Resistant Depression

Posted on Fri, 23 May 2014
Question: I have a highly intelligent daughter who has been depressed for years. (one suicide attempt 10 years ago). She sees a psychiatrist and is taking antidepressants. Unfortunately, they do not seem to help. When she is not working, she tends to lie in bed all the time. She take sleeping pills to make her sleep. Usually does not start working until noon. Works for a few hours and then back to bed. She is a professional and has her own business so therefore she can do this. All attemps by myself and others to get her interested in outside interests have failed. She says she is "sad". What on earth can I do for her?

Brief Answer:
Resistant depression

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

What she is suffering from is a resistant depression. Around 10% of the cases of depression are resistant depression cases and they are definately difficult to treat. Some of the options which have been suggested for resistant depression are :
1. Modified electro convulsive therapy.
This is a wonderful treatment and personally my firsy choice for such cases. Very safe and least troubling. Has a very good response rate.
2. Kitamine therapy
One of the new approaches for resistant depression. Kitamine given by injections in multiple sessions breaks the resistant depression.
3. Adding lamotrigine
4. Adding lithium
5. Adding antipsychotics like olanzapine or quetiapine with the antidepressants.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.

If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
