Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: I have a retina edema issue and my retinologist says it is caused by hypertension. My internist is treating my hypertension, and I am wondering if I should have a specialist consult as the retinologist says the edema is still there and a little worse. it does not affect my vision. Brief Answer:
This requires examination by a retina specialist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic

I am Dr. Dadapeer K, an ophthalmologist and I will be answering your questions.

I reviewed your history.
It seems from the history that you are having retinal edema as diagnosed by your retinologist and you are on treatment for hypertension.

Hypertension can cause various retinal problems like retinal vein occlusion, retinal edema, serous retinopathy....

Hence this requires evaluation by simple tests like indirect ophthalmoscopy, fundus photography and if required tests like fundus fluorescein angiography, ocular coherence topography....

The treatment of the above mentioned conditions is usually done by laser or by injection of drugs like lucentis or avastin.

Since the problem has little worsened according to your retinologist I advice you to consult retina specialist for examination and further advice accordingly.

Hope this information is helpful to you.
Do write back to me for further questions.

Thank you

As mentioned the retinologist has done both the laser and injection of lucentis and I have confidence in the retinologist's opinion that blood pressure needs to be controlled. (I saw him yesterday and he says to make sure my blood pressure is under control). The question is what specialist is available to consult with my internist on different hypertension medications or treatments? Should I go to a endocrinologist? a Cardiovascular doctor? I think I need fresh eyes on this.

Brief Answer:
You need to consult cardiologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up question.

Since you are already given injection lucentis and laser procedure has been done, no need to be worried.

The next treatment is control of blood pressure by treatment of hypertension. A cardiac doctor is better for treatment of blood pressure.
Hence you need to visit a cardiologist for further treatment of your blood pressure.
