Suggest Treatment For Ringing Ear Infection After Undergoing Wart Treatment

Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: I used dncb wart treatment on several areas of my scalp and experienced a sever reaction. I developed a bad ringing ear infection and had discharged coming from my ear and eyes for weeks on end. My eye swelled up on several occasions. I have been to the ER twice and am currently on 2 antibiotics. I'm not sure they're working as my ear is still ringing. The area on my thigh where I first applied the medicine is still red after weeks after stopping the treatment.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics should continue

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

The discharge from your ear could be otitis media. However the medial crusting near the eye and the swelling of the orbital area looks upon general inspection to be pre septal cellulitis or early presentation of orbital cellulitis. Both conditions can lead or be caused by a sinus infection ( sinusitis). The tinnitus can be due to nasal obstruction interfering with the Eustachian tube opening and closing. Treatment for all three is antibiotics. If the swelling gets tense and progresses rapidly despite the antibiotics, surgical drainage should be considered, in consult with your doctor. Glaucoma and diabetes should be screened for, via checking Intraocular pressure and FBS/HbA1C. Steroids use should be held till at least three days after the antibiotics.

Thank you Dr.
I've never been aware of any sinus issues.

(1) Are you saying that both of these conditions are unique and are unrelated to possible side effects due to excessive use of dncb? Although instructed to do so, I was using dncb on areas that weren't even warts yet have been since diagnosed as "barnacles". I used allot of this medicine.

(2)The first application area of the dncb on my thigh is still bright red, (after almost 1 month) and has a rash like appearance. Will this redness ever go away?

Brief Answer:
dcnb use can lead to superimposed infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Based on the pictures you sent and your description of the dcnb use, the conditions I described in the previous answer are possible.

An allergic response to the dcnb is also possible, but that too being a foreign substance cause an infection leading orbital or preseptal cellulitis.

For the thigh rash you could apply local calamine lotion/ betnovit cream. Anti histamines like desloratidine can also be taken along 5 mg bd for 5 days. Most likely it will fade away.

Let me know if there is any clarification

Thanks.
