Question : My friend has just been put in a Group Home, after being released from hospitalization for a relapse of schitzophrenia. He is 45 and responded very well to the medication. However, he is far from where I can visit him, and I want to try and get him placed in a Group Home closer to where I live.He wants to live on his own with the guardianship of his parents which proved to be a disaster in the past. Is there any way he can live on his own as an outpatient with a social worker who checks on him weekly to see that he reports to his doctor and is taking his medicine?
Brief Answer:
Consultation
Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.
Unfortunately schizophrenia usually requires group homes to achieve best and safest results. We want to avoid re-hospitalization which requires medication adherence, which is difficult for people with schizophrenia to do on their own, thus the need for a group home with daily observed medication administration. It is the best thing for him to keep him healthy and safe.
