Suggest Treatment For Severe Acne

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Apr 2015
Question: My wife is having PCOS since last 5 years. She has severe problem of acne on her face and is taking oral contraceptive pills to control the hormones. But the situation is still not under control. We are considering dietary changes like stopping milk as we read on the internet, milk intake aggravates the problem of acne. Is this correct? Is there any other dietary restriction which she should follow? What should be other actions we can take to control the issue of her acne?

Brief Answer:
Avoid oily and spicy foods.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Acne is a common problem associated with hormonal imbalance caused by PCOS. Milk ingestion does not cause a hormonal problem or a acne but can cause a weight gain that can further aggravate PCOS.
Apart from the hormonal treatment ,the next level of treatment is with Retinoids (isotretinoin). I consider it as a wonder drug for acne.
Retinoids are given with lot of precautions keeping in mind ,the most important of all is two negative pregnancy test before taking the medicine. Apart from this your liver profile and cholesterol has to be normal too.Your dermatologist would tell you in detail about all the precautions required. Retinoids are reserved for all resistant acne cases.
I would recommend that you use a daily cleansing regimen- washing the face at least twice a day with acne control soap or benzoyl peroxide along with a topical preparation such as tretinoin.
Along with this, you need to restrict the oily and spicy food, avoid exposure to sun and dirt and increase the intake of water and fresh fruits.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.
