Brief Answer:
Probably viral diarrhoea

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking at HealthCareMagic. Most often diarrhoea in children of this age is caused by a virus called rotavirus. It does not respond to antibiotics and subsides gradually over 3-7 days. Another possible cause could be bacterial infection or gastroenteritis but unless associated with bloody stools. From your description, there are no ominous symptoms present. Further the change in consistency of stool is a positive feature. Therefore you need not worry and it recovers in the same time irrespective of the use of antibiotics.

ORS or Oral Rehydration Solution is the mainstay of treatment in such cases. It comes in form of a XXXXXXX which needs to be dissolves in a litre of water and given in small amounts. Please note, smaller sachets for reconstitution in 200 ml are also available and you need to dissolve it in the right amount of water. You have to replenish the salt and water lost and unless you do so by the use of ORS, the child will land into dehydration which is a cause of concern. If you give the child fluids adequately, things should soon be fine. Give the child plenty of curd but avoid milk for a week or so. Giving prebiotics and probiotics like Enterogermina 1 XXXXXXX twice daily for a couple of days should also be helpful. You may also give zinc supplements like Zinconia syrup 5 ml twice daily for 3 days or so. It helps in repair of the inner lining of the intestine which gets damaged in such diarrhoeal episodes.

Please be patient. The diarrhoea may take a few days to come down. If you can hydrate the child well, you need not worry. The adequacy of hydration will be evident from the number of times the child passes urine. If the amount of urine passed is lower than normal, you would have to consider that the child is going into dehydration. Continue giving the child semisolids and normal food in the meantime. But if the activity of the child comes down, you would need to take the child to a doctor and get him investigated.

Brief Answer:
It could be a normal variation

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Passing stool 3-5 times a day is quite normal for a child of this. It is slightly higher in case of your child. I would not worry about it so long as it is not watery and I would label it as normal.
It could be that the normal beneficial bacteria that reside in the intestines, have been killed alongside the bad bacteria with the treatment for the episode of diarrhoea two months back. I think that replenishing the normal flora would resolve your problem. Let me assure you that stool can contain some amount of mucus and if the stool is not watery you need not bother.

You can still give some ORS to be on the safer side. What is important is to give plenty of curd / yogurt and also Enterogermina which will help in replenishing the normal intestinal flora and eventually resolve your problem.
