Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain And Cough In An Elderly Person

Question: I am the person legally on a medical directive for a 91-year-old widowed lady. She had a severe cough in early December. Her doctor send us for a chest x-ray, which is negative for pneumonia. Her caregiver took her to the ER on Dec. 15th due to pain in her shoulder and back. She was given cough medicine in liquid and pill form. Yesterday she was convinced it is her heart. We ran the diagnostics on her pacemaker with normal results. She is actually in excellent health except for her back pain, which we continue to advise her is muscular from coughing. Her husband died of renal failure at age 91 - 3 years ago. She is convinced this is life threatening. Rather than keep running to the ER and her regular doctor, would acupuncture or a chiropractor be something that I could recommend for her at her age? She is on multiple medications since her pacemaker was installed in 2012, and her blood pressure and her heart rate are fine. This is an emotional and mental situation that I am having some difficulty helping her with. She lives alone with a caregiver for only 3 yours a day, I am responsible for paying bills and taking her to doctor's appts.

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

It sounds like this person would benefit from seeing a psychiatrist, to help her manage stress. This may be manifesting as physical concerns about problems that aren't really there. I will say that acupuncture can sometimes be helpful for people with back pain. Chiropractors have no evidence they are helpful.
