Suggest Treatment For Severe Back Pain

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Sep 2014
Question: My elder sister has a severe back pain since last 2 months. On X-ray, this is found- " X_RAY L/S SPINE AP/LAT Small Lucent Lesion is seen in the 5th Sacral Segment". Currently she is undergoing medical treatment from a Bone specialist but he does not inform anything to her and just giving few medicines and health tonics. She is little panic. Now back pain is reduced but pain around spinal cord is increased. Please suggest, she is afraid of surgery as she is only 35 Years old and have no medical history of bone related issues.

Brief Answer:
Get MRI

Detailed Answer:
Hi There
I am Dr Mittal
I am going to try to help you with the query

You see, the small lucent lesion may be a small lesion. This is often asymptomatic. And therefore, I would suggest you do not rely on it too much.

Can you upload the x ray.

I would also suggest an MRI of LS Spine. The x ray is a good initial investigation. But a detailed study is via MRI.

Also, is there any pain in the legs?
Any tingling/numbness in legs?
Any bowel bladder issues?

Best of luck

Hi Doctor,
Thanks for your revert. We tried to scan the X-ray but could not. Picture is very blurred and unclear. if you really need it, we can send through courier.

For MRI Scan, all clinics in XXXXXXX seek a medical recommendation/advice and her doctor(of XXXXXXX Medical College) has still not advised her to go for it. He is very rude and hardly give answer of any query. This is the problem with almost all Doctors of reputed hospitals in XXXXXXX like Medical college and SGPGI

for your other queries, here is the reply-

There is no pain/tingling/numbness in legs and no bowel bladder issues.

I asked one of my physiotherapist friend and she said that these are initial symptoms of tumor.... we are very scared hearing this. She further suggested to take a physiotherapist treatment and treat the problem area with warm cloth or water(fomentation), it will suppress the tumor. Should we????

Brief Answer:
MRI is needed. Not necessarily tumor

Detailed Answer:
You can actually put the x ray on a scanner. It will give you a good image.
I will definitely suggest a MRI.
Your physiotherapist friend may be right, but we cant comment like that without MRI. Many infections look the same.
You really need to upload the image.
In case its a tumor you need to meet a neurosurgeon.
Try to meet a neurosurgeon- I could recommend someone if you like.
And physiotherapy wont heal the cancer. It will only relieve the symptoms of discomfort.
Best of luck
