It's quite possible for mother is suffering from Spondylosis of the spine or basically Osteoarthritis of the spine. This tends to get worse in cold seasons, in bending forward or lifting weights.
It is advisable to avoid doing the same. Apply warm packs to the affected regions. She needs to be fit and exercise to lose weight, control diabetes and Hypertension with regular checkup and medication because obesity and these diseases can adversely affect recovery from Spondylosis.
An Xray will be useful to look for any spine bone small fractures or slipping of the bones. If she has radiating pain over the back of the legs then it is better to get MRI also. Accordingly the definitive treatment can be planned.
