Posted on Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Question: My 20 year old son has had 3 weeks of severe congestion, drainage, and coughing
causing him to vomit. He has no appetite and is losing weight. His doctor prescribed the equivalent of a 5 day Z-Pack but there isn't any improvement. Any idea what maybe wrong with him? We ruled out mono because he's not tired all the time.

Brief Answer:
He needs to undergo investigations .

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

If your son continues to be unwell after 3 weeks and a course of antibiotics, It's better to get him investigated. It could be pneumonia or some other infection. He should undergo a CBC and a chest x-ray. A throat swab or sputum examination to know the type of organism causing the infection. Subsequently if required higher investigations can be done.

I suggest you consult his PCP who can examine him and order relevant tests. Your son may need another course of antibiotics which his PCP should decide. Augmentin is a good choice for lung infection. He should also be nebulized .Adequate rest , nourishing diet and pletnty of warm liquids will help.

I hope this answers your query.

Take care.
