Question: Deep chest congestion for last month. Two treatments with anti-biotic only partially successful. Wife now has it.

I can understand your concern.
Yes, alcohol can cause edema. Alcohol actually causes liver damage. This causes low hemoglobin and low protein. These are the reasons for edema.
So better to get done hemoglobin estimation and protein levels. Also get done creatinine level to rule out renal pathology.
I am bit confused. He is not taking alcohol since 5 weeks. But what about past? Was he taking alcohol regularly in past?
