Question: I had a barium swallow like a month ago, which report came out normal.
Since then i have had severe constipation, i have to take a laxative and my stook is always watery, i also have rectal pain. I have always sufferred from constipation all my life but now it seems worse. What should i do, what do you recommend. I havent seen any blood. Mayb a tiny spot of blood about 3 weeks ago but i havent noticed any bright red blood in bowel or toilet paper. I have no abdominal pain either, just severe constipation and rectal pain especially during a bowel movement.

Brief Answer:
Please take fiber rich diet and fiber supplement and lactulose syrup

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.

I care fully read your question and understand your concern.

Constipation is very common especially in females and generally no clear reason is identified. Constipation might also cause problems with hemorroids due to strain and hemorroids might worsen constipation due to rectal pain.

When we recommend treatment, we should break this viscious cycle that tends to make the problem worse.

Please be cautious on using laxatives without a doctor prescription as some of them might cause dependence and your bowel gets more lazy than before and you start to feel the need to use them regularly then.

1. To help with bowel movement the best treatment is adding fiber supplement 1-2 doses daily. You can buy those in supermarkets and take them regularly with plenty of water. Psillium is an example of fiber supplement that can be used.

2. Make sure you take plenty of fruit and vegetable in the diet also. Plums have a lot of fiber.

3. Drink plenty and keep yourself hydrated

4. Keeping yourself active and engaged in sports helps with the health in general and for the bowel also.

5. Avoid junk food, spicy food and fried, fatty ones- they are not healthy for the bowel

6. Another medication that can be used if the above measures do not help is lactulose syrup 1-2 table spoon a day. This does not cause dependance and can be taken for a few weeks till your bowel starts to improve while you are taking the fiber supplements daily without interruption

7. Please do not take senna or bisacodyl- especially if you need to use them often as they cause bowel dependance and the problems with constipation are worse when you do not use them

8. if you have rectal pain some local anal cream with lignocaine and some steroid applied 1-2 times a day might help a lot.

Hope this is helpful and answers to your question.

Kind Regards
