Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.
I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

Cough that lasts is a real concern and bothersome. There are many causes of a cough that lasts more than we expect. it is good that chest xray was normal.

Sometimes the cause of cough might be outside of the lungs. I am going to mention some of them and the characteristics of them.

If you feel some heartburn or regurgitation of acid this might be a cause of cough also.

If you have blocked nose, runny nose or sneezing or you feel secretions comming from the back of your throat than allergic rhinitis might be a cause.

If you are having medications for blood pressure, some of them might cause cough. If you do have medications in the family of Enalapril (ACE inhibitors) you will need to talk to your doctor to consider this.

Rarely the cough with a viral respiratory infection goes beyond 6 weeks so it is uncommon for you to have common cold.

If you smoke than you might be at risk for lung problems like COPD and bronkectasia which can cause cough also.

I would recommend you to have some antihistamines like cetirizine 10 mg at night to help with allergy in case the symptoms are due to some kind or allergic rhinitis and also some lansoprazole 40 mg 30 minutes before breakfast. Try those two medications for 2 weeks. Meanwihle have frequent small meals, have dinner at least 3 hours before bed time, avoid sparkling drinks and do not drink much before bed. Avoid fat food or junk food and do not use alcohol and do not smoke.

if no improvement ofthe cough in 2 weeks you will need to see a doctor. You will need to see a doctor earlier if any worsening.
Sometimes the chest xray might come out normal and we still might have a lung problem so in this case I would recommend a CT scan of the lungs to rule out other conditions of the lungs that the chest xray does not have high sensitivity as a test to find them.

I hope the is helpful and answers to your question

Kind regards
