Posted on Wed, 25 Jun 2014
Question: I am being treated for Major Depression, Anxiety, Stress, Sleeping Disorders by a renowned psychiatrist. At present medication is prescribed as follows:

1. Lamotrigine 25 Mg. (Devided in two doses half in morning & half at bed time)
2. Desvenlafaxine OD 50 Mg. (Twice a day 1 in Morning and 1 at bed time)
3. Mirtazapine 30 Mg. (One at bed time)
4. Etizolam 1 (Thrice – Morning, Afternoon and at bedtime)
5. Zolpidem 12.5 Mg. (One at bed time)

I am also a patient of High Blood Pressure and Cholesterol and prescribed undermentioned medicines by another physician:

1. Metoprolol 25 (Once a day) and Rosuvastatin 10 (One at night)

My question is whether the treatment given by the psychrist and physician seperately may be taken concurrently and is safe or not? Further, can I take Paracetamol, Diclofenic Sodium or Brufen and Pantaprazole or cimetidine etc. during the above treatment or not? Whether the long duration treatment as mentioned above will ever create some complications and adverse effects.

Brief Answer:
get drugs of psychiatry illness revised

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
You have mentioned all drugs in very good detail, but the only problem is that you have not mentioned the duration of psychiatric treatment which could have helped in proper guidance.

The drugs used for psychiatric treatment are fine except that he has given you three drugs for managing one condition - lamotrigine, mirtazapine, and desvenalafaxine : all in sub-effective or less hna needed dosages.

Secondly, mirtazapien is a good drug in itself but is avoided in someone who has hypertension or increased cholesterol or lipid profile ( which you have as you are taking roluvastatin; or might have developed in due course of treatment)..so, this drug will rather increase this cholesterol or not let it get better.

Thirdly, you are dependent on etizolam and zolpidem for sleep- which means that your anxiety is still not treated properly and sleep is disturbed despite taking so many drugs.

You should get your drugs revised as, either these are not helping or creating more side effects than.results.

Yes, You can take meds for hypertension and roluvastatin along with these drugs..there is usually no issue as such. The other drugs like pantoperazole etc., can be taken as and when needed when prescribed by the physician.

You should ideally get TSH level, Vit. B 12 level, liver and kidney tests ( all empty stomach) in early morning and see if they are disturbed..
treating them will help you a lot.

Also, according to drugs- I can see that you have some physical ailment, so, you should start going for brisk walks or jogging, increase more salad in diet and cut oil use.

You must change your diet & life style in order to get well fast, later you will be able to eat what you like.

Please increase your physical exercises, they help a lot in both managing anxiety and physical stress.

Wish you good health.
