Question: I have TD in Thailand. I took a cooking class and we did not practice good hygiene while preparing our dishes here in Pattaya, Thailand. I think it could be Escherichia coli, Campylobacter jejuni, or Salmonella. For the first 24 hours of uncontrollable blasts of diarrhea taking Imodium and Kayopectate. I broke down and bought Azithromycin 250 mg. 6 capsules. I took one last night and one this morning. Still feel a little queasy. Bowls are still not joining together though I took another imodium and more kaypectate. Do you think I made the right choice of antibiotics? Stools were black and tarry before the onset. I eat a lot of spicy Thai food. No not white so parasites didn't seem likely. I had no fever. I did not vomit. No aches or chills. Before I took the antibiotic, I could see undigested food in my feces. I just gave in and made a decision. I'll see what day two on antibiotics brings. Tonight I will take the third pill.

Brief Answer:
ORS Ciprofloxacin

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I seems that you have acute diarrhoea, most of the diarrhoeas are viral and settle down within 48 to 72 hours and an antibiotic is not needed. However if you want to take an antibiotic Ciprofloxacin would be a better choice of antibiotic. It is equally important to maintain hydration drink plenty of fluids , take ORS solution.
Hope this helps

I think you are right, though I finished my Azithromycin because the worse thing is to develop a resistant strain of bacteria. It probably is viral because guess what my girlfriend now has diarrhea. Perhaps there is a virus spreading here in Pattaya, Thailand. Probably unrelated but about two weeks ago I ran in a heavy rain where the storm sewers backed up and flooded the streets. I ran until I waded in three feet of water that must have been very contaminated, but typhoid would have had much more severe symptoms and cholera would probably also been accompanied by fever, aches and chills. If this is a virus, it only has one symptom, diarrhea. I ran out of kaopectate and only take Imodium. Most important though my stools are still much better but not combining yet. The frequency of bowl movements is declining. I still eat normally. I had pad thai, stir fried morning glory with some ginger and chili peppers last night. However, I ate only a small portion of these foods, saving some for my girlfriend, but now she is sick with what I got and getting over a cold. I eat cake rolls, cappuccino and coffee cake rolls. I had a starbucks hot moccha. I love tamarind juice. I know I should stay away from citrus juices. For breakfast I had a small portion the remainder of the stir fried eggs, garlic, and rice with a little shrimp and the remainder of the omelet with the delicious sweet red pepper/curry sauce. I worked out 3 hours in the gym yesterday and ran 6 kilometers yesterday.

Anyway I seem to be recovering, though not 100 percent. Maybe the health department here in Pattaya needs to be aware that something is going around.

Thanks, XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
