Suggest Treatment For Severe Diarrhea And Nausea While On Imodium And Zofran

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Mar 2017
Question: Hi, I have had diarrhea since Friday morning. It began with loose yellow wattery stools multiple times a day even with taking the maximum amount of Imodium. This continued into Sunday where I finally called my GI late at night when the nausea began to kick in and he said that it sounded viral. I haven't had cramps or pain really besides some phantom pains where my gall bladder used to be. I was sent to get bloodwork and do stool samples Monday evening, and dropped my samples off Tuesday morning. Tuesday I felt the best I have in 4 days with the assistance of Imodium and Zofran. Early this morning, around 1:45 to be exact I was woken up due to gas pain...after passing gas for a solid 15 minutes again I took some gas x and shortly after the wattery yellow stool returned. I have gone to the bathroom three times since then and have released the stools multiple times in one sitting, so I took some more Imodium. What should I do?

Brief Answer:
Imodium won't help much; must start following treatment...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

I am sorry for the health situation you are going through.

Diarrhea with nausea that appeared since Friday sound to be related to viral gastroenteritis.

Imodium won't help much.
I highly recommend to:
- follow BRAT diet (banan+rice+apple sauce+toast); this is light diet during diarrhea days; add yogurt and chicken soups
- take tasectan or pepto bismol to stop the diarrhea; these meds will catch the microbe and will clear off your bowels
- take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora
- take oral rehydration salts with plain water to replace the lost electrolytes and fluids with diarrhea
- I think it's time you get an antibiotic that is specifically for intestinal infection (e.g. metronidazole); but you need prescription for that, while you do not need prescription for other meds mentioned above
- continue taking antacid; add simethicone for gas relieving

I'm sure you'll be fine if you follow this advice.
Otherwise, should go to ER and take immediate intravenous fluids replacement therapy together with prescription meds.

Wish fast recovery.
