Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation would be greatly beneficial.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Children frequently get respiratory tract infections due to viral cause. It leads to thickening of the mucus (cough) which sometimes blocks the Eustachian tubes, the tubes that connect the inner throat with the middle ear cavity. These tubes equalize the air pressure inside the middle ear with that outside. Blockage of these tubes may lead to pressure discomfort and thereby ear pain. Since this is beyond the ear drum, application of ear drops will not help (as it will not penetrate the ear drum). You need to give steam inhalation to your child. Water in form of vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the mucus and would thus provide relief from the ear pain. Also give some antiallergic like cetirizine. Please be patient. It should be back to normal in 3-7 days.
