default
Posted on Wed, 1 Mar 2017
Question: I have some sort of food borne illness about 2 weeks ago. I had a fever for two days. 99.5. I normally run 97.8. I am still having diarrhea. There is no blood or pus. It is lighter brown. I am also having leg cramps. I'm concerned that my potassium level is low. I was drinking gateraid though. I have been under stress due to being away from home and losing my mother three weeks ago.

Brief Answer:
Gastroenteritis!

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for choosing HCM.

You are having gastroenteritis. An intestinal infection marked by diarrhoea, cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever.Cramps are because of loss of fluids and elecyrolytes in stools.Depletion of electrolytes like sodium and potassium in the stool cause cramping in the body.I would sugggest you to keep your body hydrated and take lots of sodium, potassium and other electrolyte supplements to replenish the level of electrolytes again.Along with it a probiotic should be taken for some weeks. Our gut consists of its own flora called G.I flora.Due to infection it gets depleted, causing gastric disturbances.Probiotic will replenish the flora again and would help in better digestion and your problem will settle down as the g.i flora is again replenished.
As you are having temperature a total and differencial leucocyte count should be done to rule out infection. As in case of infection you would have to take antibiotics for a few days.
Some general measure that will help are-
Eat light food.
Don't eat fast food for few days.
Include lots of fibres in your diet.
Eat fibrous fruits like peach and oranges.
Orange and coconut water should be taken as much as possible.
Avoid cold milk.
Take lot of yoghurt in food.

Thank you!
