Question: Hi doctor, my 4 year old son is suffering from fever since sunday night. He weighs 18kgs. I have been giving him meftal plus every 6-8th hourly and switched to crocin advance10ml since last night. Temperature is around 100-101 degrees and he is active only. Today motions also started 5-6 so far. It is only 2 days now and hence did not take to doctor so far. Please suggest next steps. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to a viral infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics are ineffective in such cases. Irrespective of treatment it usually spontaneously resolves in 5-7 days. Often such viral infections manifest with fever. If your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. If not, it would be a good idea to visit a doctor and to get the child evaluated.

You need to give steam inhalation to your child. It helps in reducing the congestion. Just sit with your child on your lap and place the source of steam before you. The water vapor will be in the air and automatically the child will breathe it in. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. Use Nasoclear Saline Nasal Drops in case of nose block. Give Oral rehydration solution (ORS) if loose motion is present. The urine frequency needs to be monitored. If the child is passing urine normally there is no reason to worry.

If your child has fever with temperature more than 100°F, you need to give paracetamol (P-250, Crocin or Calpol) to it bring down. Also use tepid sponging.

Please be patient. It may take a few days for the recovery to occur. It should spontaneously resolve in 5-7 days.

Hopefully that would help. Feel free to write back in case of further queries.

Thank you so much doctor. He does not have cold or cough at all. He passed 8-9 motions today. Sticky ones, smell bad, little green in colour. I have given coconut water and little sabudaana soup. Any medicine thst you can suggest for motions? Please suggest diet. He has 101.4 degrees now, i have given crocin advanced syrup 10 ml and giving sponge bath.

Brief Answer:
The loose stools may continue but ORS needs to be given.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for the inadvertent delay in responding.

In case he does not have cough and cold you need not give steam inhalation. The loose stools may continue for a few days irrespective of treatment and giving ORS is the mainstay of treatment. You can give in diet anything that he can tolerate. No specific restrictions. The green colour of stool is due to the rapid transit through the large intestine when the bile pigments do not get adequate time to get converted to the yellow colour of stool. Unless there is blood in stool you need not worry. Give Crocin if there is a rise in temperature above 100°F.

Feel free to write back.
