Suggest Treatment For Severe Headache

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: Hi

My Friend aged 32 had severe headache for the past week and was recently admitted. She had also developed symptoms like pain in the left side of the body in hands and legs and was unable to move for a couple of days. The pain seems to have reduced now and she is able to move, however the headache seems to be severe.
I have attached the recent reports along with this query.

She is now on pain killer drugs and doctors have kept her on observation for the next two days after a dilema and hoping that the symptoms will reduce further.

She was on Fertility drugs and has stopped intake since last year. She has no physical injury in the head.

At this point, I would like to know the following facts:

1. How can we get her treated now? is it safe to wait for another two days (as her doctor suggests) with just the pain killer? Or is it advisable to get it operated immediately?

2. How risky could the surgery be? Post surgery can she be as normal as she is now?

3. What could be the actual cause for the blood clots to develop although she hasn't had any physical Injury in the head and she has stopped the fertility drugs way long back?

4. Can stress be the sole reason for the clots to form (as her doctor says)?

5. Post surgery and medications, what are all the things she should be care about going forward?

We are equally worried as she is. Please assist with your valuable suggestions.

Thanks much!

Brief Answer:
Better to get it operated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your friend's symptoms and have seen the brain scan reports.

There is bleeding in between the brain and the skull bone, which is causing pressure on the brain, leading to headache.

It would be better to get her operated as the bleeding may not go on its own. Moreover, continued pressure on the brain may lead to loss of certain brain functions.

Surgery is safe, and can be done by any neurosurgeon.

Minor trauma to the head can cause the bleeding. Sometimes, abnormal blood parameters, such as low platelet count, prolonged prothrombin time, etc can also cause this kind of bleeding.

Stress can not be the sole cause of this bleeding.

Avoid stress and regular sleep should be followed after operation.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
