Posted on Wed, 25 Jan 2017
Question: I had stomach flu 7 days ago then 3 days had a cold. Since I am having heart burning and bloating. I have been taking a probiotics but that does not seem helping.

In the past I used to have IBS time to time.

I am using antacid at night. Can I continue the antacid tablet(Gaviscon) ?

Can I continue the probiotics?
Is any digestive enzyme can help?

Hello,

Given the symptoms you described, I recommend that you consider an H2 acid blocker such as rantidine (Zantac) 150 mg taken twice a day.

This will help decrease the amount of stomach acid so that your stomach and esophagus can heal and not have heart burn. It may also help the bloating.

If you are having a lot of gas, simethicone (Gas X) can help for a few days.

Yes, I would continue the probiotics, unless you find that they cause more upset.

Once you start the Zantac, I would not take the antacid tablets further. They can interfere with each other to some extent (but it's a minor interaction).

I wouldn't try digestive enzymes right now because they can sometimes cause irritation to the stomach.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

Appreciate for answer

I started (Zantac) 150 mg and simethicone. Seems like working well.

How long I should continue?

I have already had constipation? Will Zantac or simethicone will make it worse?

I am planning to use senokot from today. Please advise if that is okay.

Detailed Answer:
I'm glad to hear that the Zantac and simethicone are starting to work.

Given that the problem only occurred for a short time (as opposed to many weeks), you can try taking the Zantac for 1-2 weeks. The simethicone you may only need for a few more days to a week.

Regarding whether Zantac or simethicone can make the constipation worse, in some people, Zantac can cause constipation. It is usually not severe.

Taking senekot would be reasonable for the constipation.

I think in a bit of time your digestive system will return to normal. But a few more days to a couple of weeks of help with these medications may help things resolve more quickly.
