default
Posted on Mon, 2 Jan 2017
Question: I am 73 years young. In the last 5 or 6 months I have been experiencing leg cramps in both calves and feet during the day if I get on my knees I experience cramps in the back side of my legs calves and back side of thighs/ham strings. The cramps last any where from 30 seconds to maybe a minute. If I stand up and start walking the cramps disappear. Also the bottom of my feet when I walk on them it feels like I have hard spots like rocks that I am walking on and on the other hand at the same time I have areas in the bottom of my feet that are constantly numb

Brief Answer:
Get investigated as advised and take treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Leg and calf cramps at this age can be due to metabolic causes or deficiency like vitamin D deficiency, vitamin B 12 deficiency, Thyroid disorder, liver disease, renal disease, electrolyte imbalance like hyponatremia, hypokalemia and hypocalcemia.

Do you have history of knee arthritis, muscle weakness or wasting?

You should get investigated for any such deficiency.
You can take multi vitamin and calcium supplements.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Dr N Kumar
