Question : Hello, my sister just fell down our carpet stairs and hurt her lower back. She fainted after and now when she stands up for too long she feels as though she will faint again. She struggles to lie down as it hurts her back.

I appreciate your concern and am sorry for your distress.

In any history of fall, especially if it presents with any of the following three symptoms , i.e Loss of consciousness , Vomiting or Seizures, head/brain injury should be suspected. I would advise you to take her to an E.R so that she be examined properly. After a neurological exam, a CT scan can be advised to rule out any serious complication. X rays of the lumbosacral spine can also be advised to look for suspected fracture, if she has intense back pain or weakness of the lower limbs. If none of the above are found NSAIDs and muscle relaxant can be advised , in consult with your doctor.
